In the world of early childhood education, collaboration between schools and families is essential. Parents play a critical role in shaping the school experience, and their voices can help drive meaningful improvements in policies, curriculum, and community engagement. To harness this collective wisdom, I recently explored technology-driven methods to assess parent interest in forming a Parent Advisory Board (PAB) at The LUX School.
To ensure the success of this initiative, I tested various online assessment tools before selecting Google Forms as the most efficient platform. While platforms like SurveyMonkey, PollEverywhere, Typeform, Quizizz, and Mentimeter each had unique features, they came with limitations such as response caps, limited customization, or lack of structured data organization. Google Forms, on the other hand, offered seamless integration with Google Sheets, unlimited responses, easy access for parents, and real-time organization of data—all crucial for effectively gathering input.
The survey was designed to gauge interest levels, understand parent expectations, and identify potential members who would be willing to contribute their time and expertise. Because Google Forms allows for open-ended responses, I was able to capture thoughtful feedback beyond just “yes” or “no” answers.
The formation of a Parent Advisory Board (PAB) holds tremendous value for both the school and its families. Some key benefits include:
A PAB fosters ongoing communication between parents and school leadership, creating an environment where families feel heard and valued. It ensures transparency in decision-making and provides a structured space for discussing school initiatives, policies, and concerns.
Parents bring diverse perspectives and insights that can help shape school programs, events, and child-centered learning experiences. They can offer feedback on curriculum enhancements, extracurricular activities, and social-emotional learning approaches that best serve students.
A dedicated group of parent advisors can play a pivotal role in fundraising and organizing events that support educational initiatives, teacher appreciation efforts, and facility improvements. Additionally, a PAB can create volunteer opportunities that strengthen the school community.
Rather than relying solely on administrative decisions, a PAB amplifies the voices of families in shaping school culture. Parents from diverse backgrounds can share insights on inclusion, equity, and cultural responsiveness, ensuring that school policies are inclusive and representative of all families.
When parents are actively engaged, children benefit. Research shows that strong school-family partnerships contribute to higher academic achievement, better social-emotional development, and increased student confidence. A PAB can collaborate with teachers to create a more holistic approach to student success.
The responses collected through Google Forms have already provided valuable insights into parents' enthusiasm for a Parent Advisory Board. Moving forward, we will use this data to identify potential board members, set goals, and structure the board’s operations. Our next steps include hosting an informational session, defining roles, and aligning our goals with the needs of The LUX School community.
The success of The LUX School relies on strong partnerships with parents, and we invite you to be part of this initiative! If you're interested in joining the Parent Advisory Board, please fill out the interest form at this link.
By working together, we can build an even stronger learning community that prioritizes engagement, collaboration, and student success. Thank you for being an integral part of The LUX School family—we look forward to growing together!
